Finding the perfect work-life balance isn’t the easiest thing, especially as schedules seem to get busier and busier with each passing year. With the mounting pressures of family, friends, self, and business, creating a work-life balance has become more important than ever.
A work-life balance is beneficial for more than just the employee. Studies have shown that employees who possess a healthy work-life balance do better and are more productive while at work, creating a better culture and higher chances of success.
Use these tips to help promote a positive work-life balance for your employees.
Paid Time Off – Rather than calculating how much time to allow each for paid sick leave, personal days or paid vacation, employers can offer paid time off (PTO) to enable the employee to decide how, when, and why to use their paid time off. Not only does this give the employee more freedom in their choices, but it also eliminates the need for further policies and paperwork, such as defining what constitutes a sick day. While it is arguable that there are drawbacks to paid time off, the disadvantages do not apply to work-life balance.
Work Remotely – Allowing employees the option to work from home comes with many benefits. Rather than taking a sick day, employees may opt to get work done with the comfort of their blankets and hot soup. This would also make employees more capable of handling life responsibilities, such as childcare or a doctor’s appointment, while also staying on top of work responsibilities.
Work Space – While the traditional office set up with a computer and desk is still great for productivity, there many aspects that go into creating a conducive workspace. Different motivational colors could be added to the walls and decor. To allow for a little more relaxation, a company could invest in couched areas where employees could work on their laptops for a more comfortable work day.
Time Management – Help employees to help themselves by offering time management skills training. Studies show that workers more commonly take work home with them. However, equipped with the right knowledge, workers would know that by investing 10-12 minutes in planning their day, they would save about 2 hours of wasted time and effort throughout the day. That’s the difference between clocking out at 5 or working at home til 7.
Monthly Events – Whether it is hosting dinner in the company kitchen or going out for team-building exercises, creating and encouraging the participation in events and activities outside of working helps enable bonding and team building and increases company loyalty.
